Link Excel column to layer automatically

Hello, I have not found a clear way of doing this yet via google so if you know, please help.

I'm working on a dynamic network diagram built from an excel spreadsheet.

I'd like to be able to say, if OS=Windows, VERSION=2K3, then automatically add the shape to the Windows Layer and the Windows 2003 layer so I can show/hide layers depending on need.

I can link other columns to data graphics OK, but can't see how to do this with layers at all.

moving shapes between layers based upon a linked value will probably require you to write custom code.
