I have scoured the internet (and this site) looking for a definitive answer to whether or not org chart hierarchies can be updated through Visio, by leveraging a linked Excel table, but have not had success.  I have managed to Link Data to Shapes, and manage title and name updates to those shapes, but am unsuccessful with regards to updating hierarchies (i.e. - changing the layout of the org chart if employees have new managers).

I am utilizing Visio 2010 Premium, so while this license allows me to refresh the data within the existing boxes, thus far it will not reorganize the org charts to reflect new hierarchies, or managers.  Is this possible - or is the hierarchy static once created?  This would be a pretty big disappointment if the hierarchies cannot be updated with the data refresh.

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this subject has been covered, or if I have posted in the wrong forum.

The short answer is no. Visio orgcharts are static (with the exception of some of the data) after they have been created.

I may be wildly off base here but,
There may be a chance you can create a tricked out timeline or multiple parent child timelines that could create the automated display you are looking for.

The how to's to go about this could be varied.
I would think you would make vertical timelines that do not display dates and give your different levels of hierarchies a monthly or quarterly value. That would make them move up or down as they change positions.
I would assume also that you would need to create some custom milestone stencils and maybe a bit of VBA code.

Just a thought.
