Gradient Fill on a Curve

When using the fill action, I have attempted numerous ways to have the fill & fill highlight to follow the shape and not cut through it, I have attached a file in an attempt to demonstrate what I am trying to achieve. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate the assistance

Two ideas:

1. Make a custom line pattern that approximates a gradient fill. You can do this by stacking lines of different shades of a color.
2. Slice a wedge from a circular segment. Apply a gradient fill, then duplicate the segment.
