I would like to draw lines between boxes and label those lines, but I want the text on the line to remain horizontal.  I see instructions for doing it to shapes, but not lines; I know that in earlier versions of Visio there were lines someone had defined this way that you could put in a stencil and use.  How can I do it in Visio 2014?

It should be exactly the same. Have you tried it?

I haven't imported the old ones, no -- don't have them here at work.  And I didn't know how they worked.  Shoul dI just import that stencil into this version?   I've seen references to difficulties doing that.

No, have you tried the same instructions?

Where have you seen such references? Just put the stencil(s) in your My Shapes folder.
