When I open one of my custom stencils, I get a message that says, "This file is opened read-only. Shape numbering cannot be applied." Unless I did so inadvertantly, I didn't add any shape numbering when I built the stencil. Do you know why I'm getting this message?

Thanks,
Mike

I can't say how you did it, but could it be that the shapesheet of your template page contains under "actions" the formula "RUNADDONWARGS("SN","/shape_num=1")" or something similar? Delete the row and save the template again.
(right click on empty space of page and chose shapesheet to open the shape sheet of the page)

I had the same problem, but deleting the Action Row didn't do it for me - the event sprung back to life after closing and reopening the doc.

However, running the code shown in this post by David Parker worked:

Note I changed the "CFF" to "SN" where appropriate.

I must admit, I'm trying to work out what the original question was about. It reads like the shape numbering is being applied to the stencil rather than the document.

In my document I certainly had done some Shape Numbering. This persistent event stuff is a definite drawback to using the feature - even if I now know how to get rid of it!

Be nice if the Developer > Persistent Events function did what it said on the tin in terms of removing said events, but at least I know how to do it programatically now...

I have the same problem. I have a lot of schemes created from my custom template based on cross-functional flowchart model. When I try to print out one of them by clicking the .vsd file by right mouse button in windows explorer and then choosing print option, file opens in visio and such message appears (file is opened read only. shape numbering cannot be applied). Running procedure mentioned few posts above as a macros had no effect. What may be the addressing of the problem?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, this annoyed me so much that I implemented the "Remove AutoNum Event" button in a free Visio Addin (does lots of other things!) so that it's always available to me easily.
