Is there anyway to "half" lock a layer?

The lock feature for layers is a great way to keep me from shooting myself in the foot. I love that it won't let me modify or delete the shapes. I just wish it would allow me to select a shape in a locked layer so I could see the Size & Position panel or copy it.

Is there any way to make the Lock feature work like a "read only" setting?

given shape ===> right click ==> format ==> protection

if ambitious, can use the GUARD(xxx)  function in the shapesheet of a given shape

Thanks for that. That definitely solves part of the problem.

I'll look into the GUARD(xxx) function later.
