If you go to the Microsoft Visio Forum, http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.visio.general&lang=en&cr=US, and search for books, there are numerous entries with a variety of suggestions.

For on-line reference, though, you might want to look at:
  1)  Developing Microsoft Visio Solutions.  Don't be concerned that it's V2002, the info still applies.  This is an excellent resource.
  2)  Visio 2007 on MSDN.  This does deal with V2007.
  3)  Visio on Office Online.  This is Visio home page.

If you want books related to Visio-development and advanced usage, and like to have a nice chunk of paper in your hands that you can write on and put sticky-notes into, then these two books are the Kings:

Graham Wideman's classic, updated only for Visio 2003, but still very, very applicable:
Visio 2003 Developer's Survival Pack

David Parker's "new kid on the block" is also really cool:
Visualizing Information with Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007

Visio Guy --

Didn't your website used to have some books listed?  That's one thing which seems to have disappeared with the new format.

Hi W,

Yeah, those book links are still on the site, but they are buried in the links list. They are also in the Amazon ad at the right, down at the bottom. But you're right, I should probably get them back on the front page. Mr. Parker's book certainly deserves to have more sales!

The good thing about Visio is that you can buy all the books about it.
Don't try this with Excel or knotting.

Funny you should say that, because my experience was just the opposite.    :(  I had trouble getting a good, comprehensive book on Visio.  David Parker's book helped a lot, as did the Developing Visio Solutions that came with Visio Tech 4.1 (no longer in print).  I haven't tried Wideman's book yet.  However, with Excel, there's a ton of books out there, and those by Walkenbach are excellent!

Knitting???   ???  Wasn't on my agenda!   ;D

Personally used, and enjoyed, Visio 2007 (or 2003) for dummies... :-[

There are two new offerings for Visio 2010 general usage and power user tips.

The book I've just written has gone to publication, and is available here:

Using Microsoft Visio 2010, QUE Publishing

Fellow MVP Scott Helmers has also produced a fine offering:

Microsoft Visio 2010 Step by Step

Both books cover the new features in Visio 2010 in detail and very well. Scott's book talks a bit more about the features you only get if you have the Pro and Premium editions, whereas Using Microsoft Visio 2010 tries to keep Standard users in mind as much as possible. Scott's book focuses heavily on network, flowchart and process diagrams, where I delve into scaled drawings and other areas a bit more.

Using Microsoft Visio 2010 also comes with online access to its contents, and is accompanied by 37 videos and 11 audio clips to make it "more than just a book". Whichever book you purchase, if you work through all the examples, you will be a very proficient Visio 2010 user, and will learn a lot!

If you've read either one, I'd love to hear your opinions!
