Shape DisplayOptions Greyed Out - Can't see UML Statechart Transition Names

Using Visio 2007 Professional, if I create a UML Statechart Diagram I can drag states and transition shapes to the diagram.  I can name my state shapes, and I can create names for the transitions, but the transition names are never visible, making the diagram useless.

If I select my transition arrow and Click on Shape Display Options I find most displayed options Greyed Out, including the Name option which is turned Off.  Shape Display Options for a State shape does not have the Name option greyed out and it defaults to On.

The Microsoft online Help indicates that the Name should be displayable and the samples show transitions with Names, which is the intuitive behavior I would expect by default.

Is there anything to be done about this?  The Microsoft documentation about this topic is woefully weak.  Or am I missing something obvious.

I have had similar problems before with similar inflexible shape options although I do not remember the details.
