delete items from variable list??

If I create a shape data field of type = variable list, I can use the shape data dialog (or window) to add items to the list.

How do I delete items from the list via the shape data dialog/window? It seems like the delete key should work but it merely clears the field (and adds a "null" item to the variable list). I don't want users to have to click the "Define" button to delete from the list -- if fact, I plan to hide the define button.

I'm hoping I've overlooked something really obvious...

Thanks...

There's nothing obvious in your question at all.
I personally don't use variable lists, because of these ugly additional list items.
But what about regenerating the list by a SETF function?
