Another annoyance I'm hoping has a simple solution.

Is there a way to glue lines to a guide line while using they Shift key to keep the line vertical or horizontal?

When you use the shift key, the gluing is dicarded.
If you want to glue a line to guide, glue BOTH ends of the line to it.

If you want to glue just a single end, once the end is on the guideline, release the the left mouse button.

Thanks for the pointers.

After playing around a bit, I have found that I can create my straight vertical or horizontal line first, using the shift key, and then drag the entire line (not the end) till the end meets and snaps to the guide. When the red square appears at the intersection, the line is glued to the guide. The line can even be glued to guides at both ends if it (the line) is the correct length to start. If the length is a bit off, gluing one end first and then pushing the line around a bit while the left mouse button is still depressed will glue the second end to the second guide without ungluing the first end. Interesting.

This all works with both regular drawing lines and connector lines.
