I am trying to import an Excel worksheet and link the data to a Visio timeline.  The excel sheet is simple:

ID     Name     Start Date    Finish Date
1      Task 1    1/1/2025     2/1/2025
2      Task 2    3/1/2025     3/1/2025

When I import it and drag, for example, Line 1 (Task 1) onto the Visio diagram, it chooses a random date (not the StartDate).  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?  I ultimately want to use Excel to provide the data so the Visio diagram automatically updates.

When importing data from Excel into a Visio timeline, it's crucial to ensure that your Excel columns are named exactly as Visio expects. Visio recognizes specific column headers:
  • Task Name
  • Start
  • Finish
In your case, renaming your Excel columns to match these headers should resolve the issue:
  • Rename Name to Task Name
  • Rename Start Date to Start
  • Rename Finish Date to Finish
This alignment allows Visio to correctly interpret and map your data when creating the timeline.
