As more people get Snapdragon X laptops, this question becomes more important:

Visio 2021 and higher - does it run well on SnapDragon X laptops?

I guess this will be through X86/X64 emulation? Do the Visio add-ins work well on such laptops? Nikolay do you have any experience or customer feedback on this? (I also wonder about say Excel add-ins, how does Excel the ARM version interact with an add-in compiled for X86/X64?)

The next gen Snapdragon X laptops will be even (much) faster so their performance reserve for emulation should be even greater, though I will gladly stick with Intel & AMD for now especially AMD has put out some pretty great laptop CPUs.

Not sure the question is properly stated...

First, there are brand names featuring said processor on the market, running Windows.  One brand would have a vested interest in running M$ product.  See https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Windows-Touchscreen-Snapdragon/dp/B0CXKWPR3V/ref=asc_df_B0CXKWPR3V?mcid=f7ff3c1de8ab341db946061f02caf8d9&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=704452679952&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15709476590453960974&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031161&hvtargid=pla-2344969383754&th=1

Thus, does the question concern the Visio product, regardless of platform, or is the focus on the platforms using the indicated processor?  Or, is it directed toward non-Windows platforms which would run Windows emulators?  As I have neither, nor followed either, actually, if you want to provide both, I'd be happy to do some bench marking, eh?  😂😂😂 😎

The previous generation Qualcomm (Snapdragon) notebooks for Windows had awful performance, but the Copilot+PC laptops with Snapdragon X should be much better. I wonder if these laptops run Visio and Visio add-ins well.

Nikolay

I have not seen a single person running Visio on ARM (or ARM64). So can't help here. As far as I know, there is no desktop Visio version for ARM, not sure about emulation (if it exists or not). I'd say no, based on Google search.

The basic office apps like Word and Excel were compiled for ARM architecture, i.e. there is now also ARM version of those, as far as I know. But not Visio.

@wapperdude I think it is not exactly about Windows, there is now a version of Windows that runs on ARM processors as well; it is about different processor architecture. I.e. the issue is, the set of instructions of an ARM processor is completely incompatible with Intel or AMD x86/x64. No classic Windows EXE or DLL will run there unless recompiled from sources, virtualization (like WINE on linux) is also not possible. It is very similar to asking how to run Visio on Android phone or tablet. AFAIK, as of now, the answer is discouraging - you can't do that.

I've moved to a new AMD last year (ThinkPad P14s G5, AMD 8840HS). To be frank, I wouldn't care much about the copilot thing, why would you want to run AI stuff locally anyway? Looks more like marketing to me..

@Nikolay:  Ah.  Thanks.  ARM architecture vs x86, for example.  That would probably be a problem for Visio.

The core question is, is the X86/X64 Emulator for Snapdragon X Plus/Elite good enough so Visio and Visio add-ins run well and are stable running on this specific ARM-based platform?

As this is more than hypothetical, the answer must come from either M$ or users with related experience.  I am neither, but find this interesting.  Once again, I pinged Copilot.  While not an authority, it does have a broader exposure base.  Here's what it says:
When it comes to running Windows-based apps on ARM architecture, there are a few things to consider:

Native ARM Apps: Some apps have been specifically designed or optimized to run natively on ARM architecture. These apps take full advantage of the ARM processor's capabilities, providing optimal performance and efficiency.

Emulation: For apps that haven't been optimized for ARM, Windows on ARM includes an emulation layer. This allows most x86 and x64 applications to run on ARM-based devices. While emulation can introduce some performance overhead, it ensures that a wide range of existing Windows apps can still be used.

Compatibility Resources: There are resources available to check app compatibility with Windows on ARM. Websites like WindowsOnArm and Works on Windows on Arm provide information on which apps run natively or through emulation on ARM devices.

In summary, while some apps may need to be optimized for ARM to achieve the best performance, the emulation layer in Windows on ARM ensures that most existing Windows apps can still be used. If you have specific apps in mind, you can check their compatibility using the resources mentioned above.

Shocking!

Shocking?  No.  Disappointing?  Definitely.

My gut feel, from my cynical twin, if Visio gets ported, it will be a subscription version only.
