How to cut text shapes out of other shapes?

Is there a way that I can place text shapes like letters, numbers, and special characters inside a larger shape and them fragment the group to get individual pieces?

Those are 2 text boxes, one with 3 letters, the other with 5. If I fragment the group, I get this:

No, I just want to be able to place text outlines.

The short answer is no. 

Fonts are not handled the same way as shapes.  That's where word art comes into play.  Alternatively, there are some programs that can convert the font outline to a "path", thus creating a shape.  Don't know of any free versions.

PowerPoint has a word art function.  Dont think it imports into Visio very well.  You might try Visio into Power Point...perhaps  more recent of Word.  Beyond that, Affinity Designer can do the transformation, but not sure about how well it imports into Visio.

Looks like it could be useful.  As shapes, they could be imported into Visio as bitmaps and the limitations thereof.
