Better option than Visio timelines?

Basically I need a way of representing timelines, visio's built in timelines are a pain in the ass (mostly it doesn't let you do overlays very easily and constantly brings the timeline to the top)

Are there any other more suitable tools (I used to use MS project to show milestones etc but my boss said "These look like ass" :P)
