Title: Error 100
Post by: Paul Herber on December 31, 2016, 02:29:21 PM
While working on some of my stencils I got the following:

An error (100) occured during the action Open Stencil
Visio cannot open the file because it's not a Visio file or it has become corrupted.

I was trying to open about 10 stencils at the same time but I'd been doing that all morning with no problem. So, I thought maybe memory resources are getting low so I close down Visio and restart the computer. Made no difference.
Next I open each file individually: all open correctly.
Ah, now I see that two of the files have the same file name except one is a .vss and one is a .vsx. Try to open just those two and I get the error and neither file gets opened.
All the documentation states that this error is caused by the file being corrupt or it not being a Visio file, but it seems to be just a more generic open file error but someone has decided to gold-plate it by stating some specific reasons that indicate that they are the only reasons for the error.
I hope this is useful to someone.

Visio 2010. I'll try 2003 and 2007 later.
Happy new year!

It's similar in Visio 2003 and 2007, except with both of these one of the files (the .vsx file) gets opened and displayed.
Visio 2010 opens neither of them. Opening three files (one  plus the two duplicates) opens just the first file. The two duplicates + one more opens none of them so it looks like some badly coded stencil open code that just exits if it finds a little error like this. Awful.

paul...thru my trials and tribulations RE 2013, I have been able to open VSS and VSX on the same drawing.
(did not do it simultaneously...but sequentially)

2013 on W7.

Hi vojo, it's not just any old .vss and .vsx files, it's two files of the same name but one .vss and the other .vsx e.g. blocks.vss and blocks.vsx

fair enough...but 2 files with same name and different suffixes are represented in NTFS as 2 different files
with different handles.  So if this is true, its a VISIO problem

At any rate, I have been able to read in a VSS and save as VSX with no problem.
on 2003, I was able to read in 2 stencils (same name and suffix but different directories) with no problems.
