Title: Shape and Layer Protect - Visio 2007 & 2010
Post by: matrixpub on January 30, 2013, 01:48:33 PM
Hi,

I wonder if anyone has had this issue and maybe has a solution for it.

I am running Win 7 (64 bit)
I have installed Vision 2007 and Vision 2010 both have the same problem.

Problem:

When I select some shapes (class diagram, Use case diagram, actor):
For a Class:
I can enter text in the class name area.
If i try to enter attributes into the centre block or funtions in the lower block, I get the message "Shape, layer protected due to permissions).

I am administrator on my machine, both Vision  versions are legit and licenced.
I can go into each shape each time I darg a new one onto the page and go into Format, Protect and un-check the Text box and then I can add text, however I don't think this is what was intended. I have used onther versions including 2007 2months ago and have never seen this before.

I have attached a screen print in (a Word doc)

Is there a setting at installation the causes this or is it because I am on Win 7 (64 bit).
I have tried everthing I can think of so far.
Thanks for your help.

Assuming that you have created a UML model diagram and are using the UML shapes on this diagram.
I'm also assuming the UML entry on the ribbon is visible. If no to any of these then that's a whole different problem ...

These shapes are controlled by the UML addon that has some code that works with these shapes.
To enter anything into these shapes you have to use the shape's right-click -> Properties menu.

Visio 2013 is totally different and uses more normal shapes without the addon.

I'm tempted to move this thread into the UML category ... anyone agree?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your help.
This explains why the flow charts work fine but not the UML
Hopefully the company will upgrade to 2013 now  :)

I put it here bacuse it was to do with "protected" shapes, however I do see your point about moving it.
