Hi,
I am trying to create a org chart in Visio that has around 7000 entities. I am using the Import functionality of the Visio and on step "Dropping shapes" it shows some unexpected error and goes into Not responding mode. When i look into task manager Visio has already taken 1 GB of RAM..
Any idea whats wrong ? Can any one help ?
Is it the RAM issue ? or the No of entities..? or is there any limit on the RAM visio can take..?
Pleas ehelp
What error is being shown?
What are you importing from?
It says "Unexpected Error" and then Visio stops responding.. I need to force close Visio. I a=have my data in Excel.. Basically the Coli has entity ID and col 2 has the parent to which entitty reports.
When I look into the Task Manager. I can see that Visio has crossed 1 GB and it stays there..
Any thoughts..?
Any idea..?
Does it work for just a small amount of data, say, 10 entries?
Yes.. It works.. for 10.. I have done for 600, 1000, 1500 and maximum 3000..
Shall I give you the Excel File you can probably try ?
Can you try for me if you have Visio installed..?

Patience! It's a large file, it will take a while.
Thanks..
You can reply me on my email.. I am leaving from my office.. Will check this forum once i reach home after 2 hours.. Will keep an eye on my email on my mobile phone.
Sorry, after 2 hours the import was still going. I need to do other stuff. Maybe someone else can help. I'm away for the weekend.
Just a thought.
What's the meaning of having a 7000 items org chart?
No one can read it (nor handle it, as the previous conversation shows).
I know, you certainly have your reasons for doing this, but one could consider splitting the 7000 monster in smaller bites.
--> Categories, or at least part 1, 2 and so on.
If even more you could consider using a interactive document, the reader could navigate it.
Just some thoughts.
Cheers, Yacine.
I ran the wizard with the Excel file again and it ran for 8 hours without finishing, the last text on the dialog box was "arranging shapes on page 38 ...", with 1GB of memory used, and not responding.
I have to agree with Yacine. I see these requests frequently, and I'm not sure what people really do with them.
I am aware that people print out monstrous org charts on huge pieces of paper, then hang them on the wall for meetings. But even then, 500 shapes is a lot to digest. I would imagine, at some point a manager is free to "fire the interns!" and they don't need to be discussed, nor drawn :)
