This seems way more complicated than it needs to be.

  • Start a brand new drawing
  • Drop an Exterior wall onto it
  • Set Shape Properties, make the length 16 Feet
  • Clicking on the shape, a nice 16' - 0" shows up above it
  • Right click, add dimension -  16'-0" is replaced by 2"
  • Wall is actually 2 inches long.  No amount of changing drawing scale or page setup will make the dimension match the property
  • Scream

How do I tell Visio that I want my 16 foot wall to be 16 feet long?  Why would the properties of a shape not match the... well, the measurable properties of that shape?!?

I've spent way to long on this, and I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing.

When you start the new drawing, do you use the provide floor planning / layout templates or do just start from scratch?

Starting from scratch means the drawing scale for the page has 1:1 scaling, but no units.  This is probably is throwing things off.  Set a page scale with units.

Floor plan fixed it!  Thank you.

I'll figure out how to set units too, that sounds worth knowing.

THANK YOU!
