Easier way to create this shape?

Everyone here was so helpful with my last post and I learned so much I thought I would post another one to see what I can learn again. Take a look at the commutator section of the picture and then what I did in the file. Tell me what tricks I could use to create this. As always I appreciate all the content I learn from those gifted in visio.

What you have is fine, except I'd make sure all the angles are correct.  You have 8 "spokes" per 90 degrees, so each spoke should be on multiples of 11.25 degrees.  For alternative technique, see my previous post about making the gear.  You can use the ArcArray to make this shape too.  That way all of the angular math is done for you.  Once you're happy with the spoke placements, you might consider either grouping or using the shape > operations > union.
