Hello,
I've been provided a Visio document by an outside resource. On the first page it had/has an embedded Excel doc that is very useful to the Visio itself. While using this Visio on my work laptop, I dragged the the excel downward and it simply disappeared. I re-downloaded the document to a new location on my machine, opened it and the embedded Excel document simply will no longer show up. I searched google for a very long time trying to figure out what the issue is. I uncheck the external data window toggle, recheck it seemingly nothing happens I even went so far as uninstalling Visio and reinstalling it. No joy. I simply cannot get the Excel doc to show up. I have re-downloaded the external doc a few times to assure it wasn't simply me saving it incorrectly, I can also see the "sheet1" is still referenced.

I then used my personal laptop and the external data pane / panel shows up just fine.

Can you attach the Visio document, or if you can't make it public you are welcome to just email it to me (in complete confidence).

Got it. Do you mean the "External Data" window? If so then it has probably been moved off-screen. There really should be a simple way of resetting all windows so thay appear on-screen.
I'll sort out what to do ...

Visio: goto File -> Options -> Advanced
and right down at the bottom ...
Put all settings in Windows registry
ensure this is ticked. Close Visio.
Open the registry editor RegEdit.
Go to key (the 16.0 is for Visio 2019 - older versions will have a lower number ...) :
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Visio\Document
Look at the values for :

DataExplorerAnchorState
DataExplorerAutoHide
DataExplorerMergePos
DataExplorerRect
DataExplorerSizePref

and let us know what values are contained therein ...

Paul,
If at present the box for "Put all settings in Windows registry" is unticked, where are settings stored?

Basically I'd be fine with simply deleting any/all Visio settings and starting over from scratch.

It used to be stored in a file in
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local
but I can't find it now. Maybe it has been changed since I last looked.
Maybe someone else knows where ...
