Auto Number with Grouped Shapes

Hi All,

I have a shape that I created for mapping business process that is made up of three boxes.
Something like this:
Process Step Number
Process Description
System

I am trying to leverage the Number Shapes function with this grouped shape, but only for the top "Process Step Number" box. I have tried leveraging layers, so assign the process step number to it's own layer and then auto number. That only works if I ungroup the shape first. Am I missing something with my layer or shape definition to make this work?
