How do I make default line width to 1px?  Right now it's 2px by default, every time I draw a shape and I have to manually change it.

ensure no shapes are selected, then menu Format -> Line -> Weight
select Custom, enter 1pt. All future lines will be drawn 1pt.

I think this applies to the current Visio session. When you restart Visio, this will be forgotten.

Unfortunately, Visio has no concept of a "Normal.dot", a user-changeable based document. However, you can build your own templates and start from there. Custom templates can have predefined styles and theme colors/effects that better fit your diagramming needs. Darn, sounds like I need to write an article...

I believe what most people are looking for is the option called Define Styles, in Visio 2016.  It is not in the top menu but if you Customize the ribbon and add it to a custom ribbon then you can access that option.  See image link below, not sure how to add one to the forum direct.

1. Select the object you want, be it a line or text.
2. Click the Define Styles button.
3. Change to your preference (You're looking for Text and Shape).
4. Select Apply.

kriskizlyk, you are the one!!!  That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you!  You have just saved me hours of frustration.
