How many layers can you use in Visio without slowing the software down too much?

I understand using lots and lots of pages can slow Visio down to a crawl, but if I create a page with about 500 containers (I will put each container and the shapes it contains each on their own layer) will Visio keep performing well on a fast pc with plenty of memory? The diagram will contain 5000+ shapes but typically only several hundred shapes will be shown at a time. I assume if you don't show most of the shapes by hiding layers Visio will perform much better than showing 5000+ shapes on a diagram.

Anyone who's had some experiences with Visio in this regard?

From my own testing I can conclude that hiding layers with lots of shapes on big diagrams makes the diagram much faster.

Will creating 500+ layers be an issue for Visio though?
