Flowchart shapes and connectors

I just realized that it is possible to shift shapes automatically when inserting a new shape in the middle of a process. While this is awesome, it's causing me a bunch of problems with an old stencil I'm using, since the function only seems to work with some of the shapes and not all of them. The highlighted 'arrows' that appear to help me add new shapes only work when I'm very zoomed in on some of my shapes?

Another problem I'm running into is that I'm only able to add one new connector to each shape with this automatic function (if I do it manually each time it works, but I'd like for it to function in the same way). How can I add several connectors to one shape?
