Beginning Custom Properties

I just spent two days worth of time scouring the available information, or rather the info I found available, trying to understand Custom Properties.

What programming language do I need to master in order to understand the premise behind how Type, Format, Value, & Prompt figure in to my over final desired out come

I am producing architectural/construction renderings in great detail, yet take-offs & price listing are still done by hand.  I would much rather produce a report from a drawing document.
