I just started having this issue with Visio drawings in Word.  If I edit an existing drawing or insert a new drawing, the entire drawing changes from a white background to translucent blue in Word.  I have not changed any settings in either the file or applications. I have attached an image as it appears in Word.  I am using Word 2013.

When the objects get too complex Visio shows a blue pattern instead of the actual object. At least that's what's happening with excel.
It has however no influence when the drawing is printed.
I don't know a solution against this bug. Sorry.

typically, when I copy into word or PPT, I use paste special ==> metafile.
obviously, one gives up the ability to edit in file...but devolution seems to be the new MS mantra
(bugs in visio 2013 that were not there in 2003  ;-)  )

prior to 2007 - usually had no problem pasting complex visio objects into a doc or ppt
2007/20010, word and ppt, would specify if "out of memory" when pasting native visio.  so I got use to metafile
