Hello --

We have a Visio drawing of the cabinet layout of our Data Center.

All of the data about the devices is in our CMDB – a SQL 2005 database. Relevant fields are:

•   Hardware device (server, router, etc.)
•   Cabinet it is in
•   Make/Model that looks up from another table the U height, power consumed, and could link to a graphic image
•   Starting U position in the cabinet

There is a database view that shows what devices are in each cabinet, their U location and U height, and the power consumed. From this we can calculate the BTU's produced.

We have connected the Cabinet object to the database, and believe we can associate a picture with a Make/Model, but so far have been unable to make it dynamic – that is to place the objects into the cabinets as the database view is refreshed. I do not want to have to drag every server into the Cabinet shape.

Is there a Visio expert that could help us make this connection?

Thanks,
Jon

one other thing, check out David Parkers book (Visualizing Information with MS Office Visio 2007). He has some good material regarding the basics of building those functions.
