Visio 2016 Cross Functional templates - swimlane fill color change.

Hi.  I'm new to Visio - any help would be much appreciated. 

1) In this latest version of Visio - is there an easy way to change the background color on an individual swimlane? I've watched some tutorials but I can't seem to get it to work on my diagrams correctly.  I try to select the shape but I don't get the exact rectangle.

2) Do I have to do the background color change prior to putting in the flow chart shapes and connectors?  With much playing around I got some of the swimlane to change color and then my connectors were messed up

Also I find that the template that MS provides is very difficult to work with - will not resize well, I can't change the width of the function box, etc.   Do others have that problem?
