Nice. I wonder if this would work for Germany (Berlin?)

Die Bundesländer. Da haben wir welche die in größeren eingebetet sind. Man wird sie wohl nur nebeneinander darstellen können. Trotzdem eine schöne Darstellung.
Danke für den Beitrag.

Thanks to inspiration from The Economist and Automotive News, I've created (in Visio, of course!) an area-independent representation of the United States...

My kids call that "Tetris Head".  You know, the situation where you see spinning, falling shapes in everything everywhere, even in your sleep?   ;-)

It doesn't by far work as well as for the USA.
Probably because of the smaller amount of states.

By the way, did you notice that your shapes lost their alignment because of the 3D rotation?
The trick is to group them and to apply the 3D rotation afterwards.

I was scribbling out the 16 Bundesländer on scratch paper after I read your post, and realized how great an idea this is for Germany!

Germany has 3 city states (Hansestadt Bremen, Hansestadt Hamburg, Berlin), plus teeny Saarland that really get underrepresented by area (in Germlisch: underrepresentedbyareacitystates), even though Germany's map is fairly simple.

Since the USA has 50 "pixels", it is more interesting to look at, though. Germany becomes a fairly formless block with only 16 bits, but the concept would still be really useful for presenting heat-mapped data.

Brilliant.
Tried myself also other shapes (losanges and triangles), but hexagons work better.

Being new to V2013, your post did also inspire me to play with the 3D features that V2007 did not yet have.
I got me an SVG of Germany's map from the net and played around.
