The extra steps needed.  Wasn't sure that something like a hidden page/sheet was a viable alternative.  That approach with changes to the code should work fine.  That's probably better than the groups approach which I took if there are a lot of shapes or other circumstances as you indicate.  I see no reason not to take your approach.

Anyway, it was a fascinating problem that I couldn't resist.
