Auto Number not being applied to layers within a group

I have a group of shapes that I am using and have applied a layer to one of the shapes in the group. It seems to work fine after testing a couple of the embedded layer functions. However, when I try to use the Auto numbering add-on with the "apply to options" set to "use layers" and I select the layer I would like to apply it to. Any thought?

The numbering only works for the top level shape within a group, not sub-shapes. This will be by design, because otherwise any grouped shape will be assigned more than one number. That would break the whole thing.
