Is it possible to change the default settings for the tags for equipment, for example valves automatically start v-1 on a new drawing, but we always start v-001 and want this to happen without having to reset the format each time we make a new P&ID. Also is it posssible to asign particular tags to the default shapes, for example the powered valves are v-1 format, but we would always want them to be XV-001 format when we drag them from the shape sheet.

Does not menu
Process Engineering -> Edit Tag Format
allow you to do what you want?

No, as this only works for the instance that you have open, when you set up a new sheet it goes back to the V-1 default format. And while it can (along with the other menu items) be used to rename a valve with a new format (powered valves to XV-001, in my example), the numbering format stays on the sheet (so copying the valve on the sheet retains the newly set up numbering format) but does not associate with the shape on the menu on the left.

Change the settings to whatever you want, then save the document as a template and always start your new documents from that.

I do agree with Paul's answer, but would like to add a remark from my own experience: forget visio's P&ID solution.
It is not only too limited, but also so closed that you can't tweak it.

It's the PID solution that controls the settings and the auto-increment numbering format.

Hi Paul,
You're right, but the tagging is almost the only feature MS put in the solution. But there's so much more about P&IDs, that it is worth writing you're own tagging routine, than to stick with MS's solution.
... I know this is not the answer to Rob's question, but I'm kind of sensitized to this issue, because several years ago I needed a P&ID solution and got disappointed by the on-board tools. I had to build every thing up by myself.

However, it is a very good answer!
