Okay, I've done a search in this forum and I started Visio Online help and searched using "create hyperlink" and read through the first result "Add a hyperlink" but I still can't get it to work. I'll attach the 2 vsd files (which are ridiculously trivial).

I followed the instruction in the online help where it talked about selecting
QuoteAdvanced options, select the Run in developer mode
etc etc and I gave a name to the shape in the second vsd to which I wanted to link. I then edited the first vsd and am trying to add a hyperlink to a word in the text in the process I created. When I select the word and select Insert, Hyperlink I see what appears to be all the information required to link to the second vsd, but when I double-click on it, nothing happens.

Obviously (?) I'm missing something simple, but what ??? Any help appreciated.

(Forgot to mention, we're running Visio 2007)

Couldn't figure out how to add the second attachment so I'll add it to this reply instead

Sorry, you can't hyperlink down to word level, only to document/page/shape.
To link to a shape you'll need the shape's Sheet.xxx identifier.

Thanks for the quick reply Paul. I have to say that Visio's hyperlinks are far from intuitive. I tried to demonstrate for a colleague how to link to and from one vsd to another's shape, and she lost it at "run as developer....".

Having said that, how about the KISS principle. We ignore (because we can't) trying to link to specific shape (not a big deal) and accept simply linking to either a new page in the same document or a different VSD in the same directory.

  • If you follow a link, is there a way of customizing the toolbar to show the equivalent of the Word "back" (Alt+Left or the white left arrrow in the green circle). Found it after googling. View, toolbars, Web does the trick

I agree, the whole idea of having to use the shape's Sheet.xxx identifier is so peculiar. Even for a seasoned Visio developer it's difficult to find.

To link to a page in the current file use the Sub-address field of the dialog box, you will be presented with a list of pages. There is also a box to enter the shape name.

Good grief, I've just passed 2000 posts so I rewarded myself with a cake bought from the village shop this morning!

Hi, I am new in Visio and was looking for an answer to a question about hyperlinking shapes to a page. I chance upon this thread (as the closest) to what I was intending to do. I wanted to hyperlink a shape (say, from VisioFileA) to a page in another visio file (say, Page 2 in VisioFileB). The intention would be to take the user to page 2 of another (multi-page) Visio file.

I would be glad to get some direction.

Thank you in advance.
