hello:

I am trying to locate something so simple, that Microsoft has managed to bury it so deeply I cannot recall where it is...

Q: where can I find a listing of file extensions used by MS Visio? ...and their intended usage?

Q: where can I find a listing of file extensions used by MS Office? ...and their intended usage?

for example, is the following list complete...?

VSD   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VSD") Visio Diagram
VSS   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VSS") Visio Shape (formerly "Stencil")
VST   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VST") Visio Template
VDX   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VDX") Visio XML Diagram
VSX   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VSX") Visio ???
VTX   (standard file extension)  (format: ".VTX") Visio ???

thanks

I thing VSS is still Stencil (there is still an Open Stencil command on the menu and toolbar).
VSX = Visio Stencil XML
VTX = Visio Template XML

If you run regedit, and search for Visio under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, you will get a listing of all file extensions attributed to Visio:
.vdx
.vsd
.vsl
.vss
.vst
.vsu
.vsw
.vsx
.vtx

I agree with Paul, vss = stencil

I suspect that you can Google each extension and find out more about it.  Or, try MSDN site, this result was for .vsl:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Search/en-US/?query=vsl%20file%20type&ac=8

Finally, there's this entry:  http://blogs.msdn.com/visio/archive/2006/05/30/608089.aspx

Enjoy!
