after i've connected two boxes with a line and an arrow sometimes i can put text right above the line and sometimes i can't -- sometimes it causes the line to go skidding across the page thinking it needs to stay out of the way of the text.  what's up?  thanks in advance.

Hi Carl,
You seem to be using text boxes on connectors.
Instead select the connector and start writing.
If the connector has already a text, hit F2 and change the text.
