When I create a new stencil and add-in new shapes (whether from another stencil or if a create a new shape from scratch).
My stencil view does not show all of the shapes that are included. When I look at the properties of the stencil, the contents lists all
of the shapes that were added to the stencil. I currently use Visio professional 2003.
I tried the following, but it didn't fix my issue:

Change the view of the stencil to different views
Increase the width of the window shape

I looked around in visio for configurations and options... I'm running out of ideas on how to fix this issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Hi Marjo, would you like to either attach the stencil here so we can have a look at it, or email it directly to me at

Hi Marjo, in the stencil you sent, 24 shapes, exactly the same view in Visio 2003/2007/2010.
What do you see? Do a screen dump (PrtScn then paste into a graphics editor, crop and paste here).

Paul,

I only see 18 of the 24 shapes  :(
I have attached a print screen so you will be able to view what I actually see.

Can I suggest you download and install my utilites:
http://www.sandrila.co.uk/visio-utilities/
and run the Stencil Report.
Copy the result and email it to me (or post it here) and we can look at the difference(s).

The report from my end is:

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to install software and/or utilities in my work environment (for security purposes).

I will install it on my home computer tonight and post the stencil report, once completed.

Hello Marjo,

Is it possible that you've not got two stencils with the same name?  Have you tried opening your document, closing the stencil and then opening it again to make sure you get the correct one?

Best regards

John

Actually, looking at the image in your Word doc below, it looks like there might be another column of masters hiding to the right (see my screenshot).  I can't remember exactly for 2003, but can you right click on the stencil header and try a different arrangement?

You might be right there, John. I see a DL, 2 Dells, 5 Fortinets, 2HPs, 2 Ciscos ...
The document shows a DL, 2 Dells, 3 Fortinets (the middle 3 from what I see), 1 Cisco.
Every 4th item is missing.

Hi John,

I have already changed the views of my stencil but still cannot see all of my shapes (some remain hidden).
If you look at the stencil properties all the shapes are listed but whatever the view I use, some shapes still remain hidden.
If you move the cursor keys (left and right) instead of using the mouse you will be able to see all of the shapes that were created for this stencil... this is the only workaround, but it tends to be annoying.

There is no duplicates of any of the shapes, they are all different. The Name of the shape seems to indicate that there is multiple copies  of the master shapes... but it is not the case, they are all different if you look at the detailed names.

None of my stencils carry the same name.
What is interesting is that I have created other stencils previously and they do not have this issue.

Paul,

I will not be able to install the utility that generates a stencil report, as I was not permitted to install it on my home (laptop for work). Same as previously, not allowed for security reasons.

I do have a personal computer at home as well, but I do not have a license for Visio. It boils down to the fact that I will be unable to run that utility.

Any other ideas guys... your help would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at your image again, you appear to have quite wide scroll bars and interface font.  Are you running your machine at a different dpi or some other accessibility feature?  Are you able to temporarily turn this off to check the effect?

Have you tried undocking and then re-docking the stencil, (by dragging the stencil header), just to see if that nudges Visio into re-ordering the masters?

If that doesn't work, are you able to try out "Icons and Details" as a view option for the masters, at least they should be displayed vertically then.

Best regards

John,
I do work at a different dpi setting (120 instead of the standard 96) and this is what is currently causing the issue. So, many thanks to you!!

The Icons and Details view will be my only option, as I do need to keep the 120 dpi setting.

Paul,
Thanks for your assistance, as well.

Marjo  ;)

Paul Herber

Interesting, I've just tried the 120dpi setting just out of curiosity and all seems fine with the stencil display.

I have attached a capture screen at 120dpi and at 96dpi. At 96dpi all 24 shapes are shown but only 18 out of the 24 are shown at 120dpi.

I wonder if this might be a video drivers or hardware acceleration problem
