Visio Pro 2013

I have a JPG on the desktop and when I 'insert pictures' into my process map, I can see only a white box with no image.  I can open the image just fine in picture preview.  Any ideas?

It's a frequently reported problem, one of the astounding number of problems introduced in Visio 2013.
Have you tried inserting images from other locations?
