I have a set of diagrams that are linked to an MS Access Database and I need to add a new attribute.  It used to work where I just added it to the database, edited the master on the Doucment Stencil and ran the Database Wizard on the master and it would ask me if I wanted to update the master and the shapes linked to it.

The link from the master to the instances seems to be broken.  How to I fix it?  Wheen I get the window shown in the attachment, selecting the Finish button doesn't do anything.  This is based on the setting on the other attachment being set to Master on Document Stencil.

Once you've changed any attribute of a shape within a page then that attribute will no longer update when edited from the document stencil, i.e. the instance on the page has overridden the value from the document stencil master. That's how the Visio object model works.

If you just want to copy a new Shape Data item to multiple shapes then there is another way: please try out my Visio Utilities at

which can do copy/paste of Shape Data.

I am trying to update the master in the document stencil, not the shape on the diagram.

Indeed, my answer is about editing the master in the document stencil. As that probably won't work for what you are trying to do I've also given some help to get around that.
