Link external data by columns instead of rows

Hello,

I am using an excel spreadsheet to link data to visio shapes. The way I have laid out my spreadsheet has the info for each shape in one column. Visio, however, only seems to be able to link data in rows to a shape, not columns. I do not want to have to transpose my entire spreadsheet; is there a way I can change the linking functionality in visio? Thanks.
