Hyperlinks From Sharepoint

Scenario:

I have successfully created hyperlinks using local file and an element on a page. It work great when I have the file local. the problem occurs when I upload the file to the sharepoint server. When I download the file the hyperlink no longer works. Is the a variable setting I can use in the hyperlink so that it know to always use the local file?
