A recent question on the Visio newsgroups has finally prompted me to ask about the various controls that are offered in the list from menu Insert -> Control.

Most of them generate an error of some sort when they are inserted, is there any point to them? What do they do? What are they for?
I have in fact just found one that works of a sort, the Microsoft Date and Time Picker control, Ok, clicking on the bit at the right allows you to select a new date that gets displayed. But once that box is on the page what else can you do with it? I can't resize it or move it even.

That Date-Time Picker control sounds like one of those controls you add to a form, but you don't visually manipulate, like a Timer, or a ToolTip (in .NET)

Somehow it must get "bound" in some sort of way to drop-down lists, text boxes, and whatnot.

As for why so many controls show up in the list, I can only guess. Some hypotheses:

1. They satisfy some sort of "COM Control" criteria, but fail at whatever extra requirements Visio might have.
2. Controls are added to your machine, but you don't have the designer-rights to them
3. Gremlins or faeries are doing their thing

That's ale right then!
I've attached a free beer, enjoy.

It's not an ActiveXXXX control.

 ???  Why do I feel thirsty?   ???

Sorry Paul, you had so elequently summarized the controls feature, that it was hard to add to it.   :o

Actually, because of posts on several different forums, I looked at the TreeView control.    :P  On a positive note,  :), it looks like it could be useful.   ::)

Sorry, gotta go, I'm really thirsty!  Long live the controls!!!   ;)
