Move endpoints of an open shape

Using Visio 2010, I have a simple open-ended shape consisting of three line segments. When I select the shape and then select the Line tool, I can see the vertices of the shape. When I select a vertex, it turns magenta, I see the tooltip "Adjust corner" and I can move the vertex to adjust my shape. All as advertised.

However, I can't figure out how to move the endpoints of the shape. When I select an endpoint, the tooltip is "Extend shape" but I don't want to extend the shape, I want to move the endpoint. I have spent ages trying to figure it out and I have to admit is has me stumped. I must be missing something obvious, but what? Please help!
