How can I explicitly name components of a composite shape.  I'm trying to do cabinets with CABINET for cutom properties, KICKBOARD, MAIN and CABINETTOP as components instead of sheet.1 sheet.2 sheet.3.  How do I rename these explicitly.

Open the Document Explorer (menu View -> Document Explorer) and go to the appropriate pages and shapes. Within grouped shapes you will see the sheet names, rename in the usual manner.

Hi Dex,

You can also name shapes via the Format > Special dialog, but you need to turn on Developer Mode first.

See this article: Top 9 Reasons for Turning-on Developer Mode for more explanations and screen shots of what I'm talking about.

OK.  The format > special worked.  The Drawing Explorer technique (document explorer???) did not.  Did I miss something.

Renaming has certain risks and disadvantages.  Let's say I have two shapes, Sheet.1 and Sheet.2.  When I change the fill color of the first, I want the 2nd to match the color.  I rename Sheet.1 to Asqr1.  Open Sheet.2 shapesheet, edit the FillForegnd entry to Asqr1!FillForegnd.  Error.  Could not get it to work using Asqr1.   :-\ Without reverting the name, I used Sheet.1!FillForegnd.  Viola!  That works.   :o  Visio seems to ignore the new name!   >:(  Fortunately, renaming is easy, just try any Sheet.XYZ and the name defaults back to it's proper name.   :)  Further proof that Visio retained the original name.   :-\
