Intelligent Connector

In Graham Widemans excellent book, Ch13 Page 194 there is an example of doing an intelligent connector with annotation circles and arrows, but the line geometry hidden to reduce clutter. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an example of this in his supplied code. Does anyone have an example of this they could share.

I'm aiming to do something similar, but showing the line on select, so would like to use that as a starting point.
