Can't get my shapes menu to work

I have just been given Visio 2010 and have lost all everything in the task pane. When I go into the view and click on the task pane and click on shapes nothing happens.  I have gone into options> advance tool bar and can see them on the left hand side.  I have had the program reinstalled but they still aren't there.  Any suggestions please.
