visio to xml (usable elements)

i am tasked with extracting data from visio into an xml format which can be used to show the visio diagram with links and actual elements instead of just an image. is this possible? i downloaded the Office2007XMLSchema for visio, but not sure if what i'm needing is possible with visio. any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Can you not just do a Save As in XML format (.vdx)?
