Custom Pattern Fill Blank

I'm building a 3D box face in Visio and I'm trying to put some metal texture on a panel. I've followed the instructions on how to add a custom pattern fill using a .bmp but when I apply it, it is completely transparent or renders as a "No fill". However, when I move the object the metal texture is there...but when I release the mouse, it goes back to No fill. Any thoughts?

Add a picture large enough to cover the shape, with the pattern repeating in the picture, has worked well for me. Then export to html will work correctly as well, I've had issues with regular pattern fill and html export (fill does not show in the html file) another thing to be aware of.
