Title: Calculating UTP cable length for cabling the building
Post by: Human on October 01, 2015, 11:24:30 AM
Hello,
I need to calculate how much of UTP cable is needed for cabling one floor of the building.

A long time ago (10 or more years) I used Visio to do this, but now I forget how.
I remember, it was something like this... I created scaled floor plan on one layer, and then on another layer I draw lines which represents utp cables. For each utp cable (wall socket) I draw one (or more) line from server room.

Then, there was a possibility to automatically calculate all line lengths on that layer, or something similar. I don't remember how exactly.

Anyone have any idea?

With kind regards,
Human

How you add calculate addiction of length on verticals ?
in visio 2010 you can get length of line via shapesheetâ„¢ - use function PATHLENGTH (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff766870.aspx)
how you calculate length about 10 years before i don't know.  may be you use macros ?

Thanks for the reply
Verticals are not important because I need information only for one floor in the building. Server room is on that floor also, and all offices too.
There is maybe 20-30 rooms (offices) and they will need 4 connections per room. So I need only horizontal cabling.
I don't remember I used macros before. What I used was layers, floor plan shapes, "spacers" and lines. And scaled metrics. Then I've put all lines to one separate layer, and somehow get total line lengths on that layer. But, unfortunately, I don't remember how...
But for sure I was not using any code, any macro. I remember it was simply to get that, but I don't remember how... :)

For example, AutoCAD have something what is called "Total length of lines per layer".
http://www.myengineeringworld.net/2012/06/autocad-total-length-of-lines-per-layer.html

I don't have AutoCAD, unfortunatelly.

And I know for sure that I used Visio to calculate something like this. But not with any code. It was only important to put all lines to one layer. And I used "spacers" to get squared meters of office, but I'm not sure if that "spacers" was related to get line lengths. I don't remember.
I'm getting old.. :)

In AutoCAD you can use data extraction method (http://www.cad-addict.com/2009/10/autocad-extracting-data-to-excel.html). It can export to Excel lengths or something properties of lines/polylines in layer.

MS Visio have same function Shape Reports, but there impossible get length of line.

How you draw path from server room to wall socket:
1. As one polygonal line
2. A lot of segments
If as segments you can use Shape Reports feature
Just get width instead length !  :)

I don't remember if I used Shape Reports before, but I think it will help. I will draw a lot of segments, a lot of lines, and it can calculate "width" (length) of all lines together. I tryed some tests right now, and I think it will be ok.

Thank you very much for your help! :)

I've made some more tests.
It will be perfect! :)

Thanks! :)
