We've all worked through the issues of things like WordArt that relied upon the 'common' drawing engine that MSO uses. The good news is that it is being brought into v2013. Another part of the story for increasing Visio's drawing capabilities are the new shapesheet sections that extend our ability to manipulate perspective. Where it doesn't bring true 3D to the product it will certainly give the more advanced users something to stay busy with for quite awhile (looking forward Yoda, Vojo, Chris, et.al.).

Microsoft may not bring true 3D to Visio, but JuneTheSecond and Vojo do! :)
