Title: Super Utilities installation
Post by: Michael on June 16, 2011, 04:08:07 PM
Hi Paul - good idea this. Another public place I can ramble on :-)

OK - a question. I'm using Super Utilities on Visio 2003 under XP SP3 with the SDK loaded.

How do I add SU as a persistent event and make sure it stays? I'm suspecting I need an argument to point to the program location.

The reasoning is that I want it to load automatically every time Visio is loaded.

(You may recall I had issues with the Cross-Functional Flowchart module always loading - I found it in the SDK persistent events directory and managed, after a few attempts, to remove it; that is my "inspiration" for this question.)

Hi Michael, if the address of the folder containing vsu.exe is added to the Start up box at menu Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> File Locations
then that should o it. However, there are some Visio addons that don't play the game correctly and overwrite other addons menus. The built-in UML and database menus both do this. Even the examples of how to create an addon menu are wrong. The examples show the addon getting the BuiltInUI, modifying it then writing this out to the CustomUI, all addons should check whether the CustomUI exists in the first place.

Wow, that is timely.  I am now using your utilities and see that one of the simple code examples I cloned when made my very first add-in is doing this very thing this morning, now I know how to go fix it.  Many thanks.

Hi Paul,
I've just downloaded and installed your superutilities product for testing.  I desperately need some of the promised functionality.
My problem:  When I open Visio with a drawing and look in Add-Ins, and I click the drop-down for SuperUtils, all of the choices are greyed out...
I'm running Visio Professional 2010 on a Windows 7 machine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Dan

UPDATE:  Just had a friend try it on an identical machine running Visio Standard.  It works ok there.  So... any chance this will work in the Professional version someday?

Hi Dan, it should work absolutely fine on any version of Visio 2000/2002/2003, 2007 and 2010, Standard, Professional or Premium. If the menus are greyed out that means that Visio has loaded the .exe file but cannot see the .vsl file. Check all file paths.

I know this thread is pretty old, but I am having the same problem with Windows 7 and Visio 2010 and the SuperUtilities menus being grayed out.

I assume many users are running this same configuration, so if you could clue me in as to how to fix this I would appreciate it.

Steps taken so far:

1) Ran Visio as Admin
2) Put installation in both Programs and Programs86 folders
3) Added path to startup and add -ins for both of the above

Additionally, the environment is Visio 2010 Pro 64bit on a Win 7 64 bit configuration.

Paul suggested that it was an issue of not seeing the VSL but I followed all the steps above to no avail.  PLEASE HELP.

Ah, sorry, the utilities are 32-bit only. Somebody forgot to add an interface (thunking layer) so 64-bit Visio could run 32-bit addons.

if you ever need a beta tester for 64 bit... here I am  :)

Thanks for the update

I need to sort out a new development environment, the utilities were written in Delphi using Graham Wideman's Delphi - Visio framework. That's a bit too out of date now - any chance of an update, Graham? So, do I move to using Lazarus or should I use Visual Studio?

Good morning,

I know this is an old thread, but I some "new" information.  I have been using VSU on my 32 bit system for years - no worries.

I am running 32 bit Visio 2010 on a 64 bit machine and had VSU installation problems.  I downloaded the latest VSU version from the web.   I checked the install_readme.txt and it says:

Visio 2010/2013/2016: From the 'File -> Options' menu select
'Advanced' then select the 'File Locations' button.
Add the above path to the 'vsu' folder to the Start Up file path.

But it doesn't stick in that field.  So I added it to the Add-Ons filed and it works fine.  (Had to use the View > Add-ons > VisioSupperUntilities to make it visible in the Ribbon.

Maybe that will help someone else.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Rob.

The 32 and 64-bit version is now in development - please wait ... it might take a while.

At last - a new version of the utilities is available, works with Visio 2010/2013/2016 - 32 or 64 bit.

Hi Paul - i just installed the 3.0.2 version on a win10 64bit and visio 2016 64bit.  I have all the file locations set appropriately.  The menu tree is greyed out.  This should be supported now right?

Hello, I think you must have downloaded and installed the old 32-bit version. No file locations are needed for the new version. Just unzip the file and run the installer. I'll be uploading a new version very soon, maybe tomorrow so maybe wait until then. I'll also be removing the old version.

Tomorrow turned into the next day, etc. Anyway, the new version is now available.
V3.1 - 32 or 64-bit Visio 2010/2013 or 2016.
